Grof Breathwork

What is Grof Breathwork and who is Stan Grof?

Grof Breathwork, is a powerful therapeutic practice developed by Stanislav Grof MD/PhD and her late wife, Christina Grof, in 1974 during his tenure, which initially called “holoropic breathwork”. It is based on deep research, depth psychology and ancient wisdom. It combines accelerated breathing techniques and evocative music and focused bodywork in a specific container to induce altered and holotropic states of consciousness and mobalize the blocked emotional energies. These non-ordinary states allow individuals to access the deeper layers of their psyche, facilitating profound self-exploration, emotional release, and healing by allowing the inner intelligence to do the healing. The breathwork is also an essential practice for the ones who seek psychedelic assisted therapy as an entery level.

The sessions are mostly happen in groups, in which the participants create pairs, beinng either a “sitter” or “breather”.  So every person experiences not only going through those states but also being in the position of a helper.

Theres a team of trained facilitators and their assistants also work with the participant upon need.

The term “holotropic” comes from the Greek words “holos” (whole) and “trepein” (moving toward), meaning “moving toward wholeness.” This reflects the practice’s aim of integrating fragmented parts of the self, promoting inner harmony, and fostering a connection with the deeper aspects of human experience.

How Does Grof Breathwork Work?

Grof Breathwork leverages the innate connection between breath, consciousness, and the body. The process typically involves:

  1. Conscious Breathing: Participants engage in deep, rhythmic breathing, increasing oxygen intake and altering the balance of gases in the body. This activates a non-ordinary state of consciousness, similar to those achieved in meditation or certain psychedelic experiences.
  2. Evocative Music: Carefully curated music guides the emotional and energetic flow of the session, supporting the exploration of inner experiences.
  3. Inner Exploration: In this expanded state of consciousness, participants access repressed emotions, memories, and insights stored in the subconscious and body.
  4. Bodywork (Optional): Practitioners may use gentle bodywork to support the release of physical or emotional tension.
  5. Integration: After the session, participants reflect on their experience, often through journaling or sharing, to integrate insights and emotions into their daily lives.

Grof Breathwork in My Practice

In my practice, Grof Breathwork is a cornerstone of the healing journey. Whether used as a standalone practice or integrated with other modalities like IFS, EFT, and sound healing, it provides a unique pathway to access deeper layers of the psyche. Sessions are carefully guided to ensure a safe and supportive experience, helping clients explore, release, and integrate their inner world. I’m also in training to become faclilitator of this container.
